Jeffrey C. Leathe, MBA
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Leathe has 20 years of global managerial experience building private and public life science companies. Before joining BIOCIUS, Mr. Leathe was Senior Vice President and CFO of Biotrove where he led the IPO process; assisted in raising $32 million in mezzanine venture funding; and negotiated the sale of BioTrove to Life Technologies in December 2009. From 1990 to 2003, Mr. Leathe was the Executive Vice President and CFO of Apogent Technologies. At Apogent, Mr. Leathe was one of the chief architects of the business strategy and was the key driver of the plan execution resulting in twenty fold growth for the company. From a $45 million LBO to a $1.2 billion, 7,048 employee, NYSE listed public company Apogent became, according to Forbes magazine, one of the best managed health care companies in America. Over this time, Apogent also became New Hampshire’s largest firm and was subsequently sold to Fisher Scientific for approximately $4 billion. 

Mr. Leathe is a director and chairman of the audit committee for Bottomline Technologies, a NASDAQ listed software company. He is a director of Integra Biosciences, a private life science firm based in Zurich, Switzerland. Mr. Leathe is a director, member of the executive committee, and chair of the endowment committee of the Senator George J. Mitchell Research Scholarship Institute and is an Incorporator and the President of the Marshwood Education Foundation.  Jeff received his MBA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, his B.S. from the University of New Hampshire and holds his CPA.

Joshua Phillips
Managing Director, Catalyst Health & Technology Partners

Joshua Phillips is the Managing General Partner of Catalyst Health Ventures (CHV), an early stage healthcare and life science focused venture firm in the Boston area.  Josh leads Catalyst’s investment activities in all areas and he represents CHV on the boards of Allegro Diagnostics Inc., Vortex Medical Inc., BioTrove Inc. (Chairman), HepreGen Corp., and Castel Inc. and previously lead CHV’s investment in Novazyme Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Genzyme).  CHV invests in companies developing technology applications in healthcare and life sciences, typically medical devices, molecular diagnostics, and tools and infrastructure for genomics and drug discovery.  CHV is an active investor that focuses on forging partnerships with entrepreneurs and co-investors to deliver superior returns. 

Prior to joining CHV in 2000, Josh was a Manager at the Lucas Group, a strategy consulting firm where he focused on engagements in the pharmaceutical, medical device, and technology industries, often where the client was involved in a transaction.  Earlier, Josh founded and built a new business unit within privately held Russelectric, developing and deploying digital turbine control systems for power generation and industrial applications.  Josh began his career with the Government Engine Business within Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, developing and testing the digital control system for the USAF F-22 fighter engine.  Josh holds a B.E. in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Vanderbilt University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Steven Gullans, Ph.D.
Managing Director, Excel Medical Ventures

Dr. Gullans is an experienced investor, entrepreneur, and scientist, most recently cofounding Excel Venture Management, a broadly focused venture fund dedicated to the life science industry. He began his career at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he applied advanced new technologies to develop human diagnostics and therapeutic interventions for diseases ranging from cancer to Alzheimer’s, publishing more than 120 scientific papers. As an entrepreneur, Dr. Gullans served as a senior executive at U.S. Genomics playing a role in operations, strategic planning, and product launch. He cofounded RxGen, Inc., a pharma services company, where he served as CEO from 2004-2008.  Dr Gullans also co-developed the technology that launched CellAct Pharma GmbH, a drug development company in Germany. He has actively advised many companies including GeneOhm which was acquired by Becton Dickinson. Dr. Gullans received his B.S. at Union College, Ph.D. at Duke University, and postdoctoral training at the Yale School of Medicine.

Gregory C. Critchfield, MD, MS

Dr. Gregory Critchfield received a Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology with a minor in Chemistry from Brigham Young University in 1976, an MD degree from the University of Utah in 1980, and a master’s degree in Biophysical Sciences at the University of Minnesota in 1985. There he also completed fellowships in Clinical Chemistry and in Health Information Sciences sponsored by the National Library of Medicine and boarded in Clinical Pathology. He served as a reviewer and study section chair for the NIH for over 15 years in biomedical computing programs for SBIR, STTR and R01 programs. His research has focused on building quantitative models in many areas of laboratory medicine including anticoagulation control, method standardization, mass spectrometric identification of drugs, predictive value modeling, quantitative health policy analysis and clinical genetics. He has served on the faculty of three medical schools: University of Minnesota, Wayne State University and Duke University. He worked as a practicing clinical pathologist with Intermountain Healthcare for nine years. He then joined Corning Clinical Laboratories in 1995, which became Quest Diagnostics, Inc., where he served as Chief Medical and Science Officer, with responsibility for science, medicine and innovation. He joined Myriad Genetics, Inc. in 1998, where he was President of its diagnostic subsidiary, Myriad Genetic Laboratories, Inc. until March 2010. Myriad is a molecular diagnostics company developing and marketing predictive, prognostic and personalized medicine products. He chaired the Governor’s State Advisory Council on Science and Technology for the state of Utah in 2007. He currently serves on the Board of the American Clinical Laboratory Association (ACLA), from 2007 to 2009, he served as a Director of BioTrove, Inc., a platform genomics company.

Guy Fish, MD, MBA
Vice President, Fletcher Spaght Inc./Fletcher Spaght Ventures

Dr. Fish is a life sciences investment committee member of Fletcher Spaght Ventures with 25 years of healthcare, life sciences and biotechnology experience. Guy also serves as Vice President in the Healthcare Practice Group at Fletcher Spaght, the firm's consulting business established in 1983. Previously, Guy was VP of Business Development and International at Collagenesis, a tissue engineering firm. He has also worked as a securities analyst in the medical devices sector for Sanford Bernstein, as a health care consultant at The Boston Consulting Group, and was a solo-practice physician. Guy holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management, an MD from the Yale School of Medicine, is board certified in Internal Medicine, and holds an AB in Biochemistry from Harvard College. Guy is a member of the Board of Directors of Phase Biosciences and Metabolon, and formerly of BioTrove. He serves as an observer of the Board of Proteus Biomedical. Guy is a Trustee at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Chairman of the Licensing Board for Dubai Health Care city and former Chairman of the Licensing Committee for the Board of Registration in Medicine for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
